Summer in Rome? Suggestions
The Summer is not the best moment to visit Rome: no air conditioned rooms, many sites totally oudoor, large crowds everywhere and challenging temperatures (this week 36/37°C)
But ehi, we travel when we can!
I’m the first travelling only in August: I’ve explored big cities like Paris or Athens in the heatwave of the summer months.
What I can suggest as guide/Roman, is to plan carefully what to see/what to do, considering the heat and adjusting your schedule to the summer days.
I know we all have a list of monuments or museums we would like to visit, maybe based on social medias or our guidebook.
But we must consider how challenging is to visit Rome in July and August (this year instead June was pretty, not too hot) to get the most for our trip.
here my suggestions to visit Rome during the heatwave:
- Early tours : if you want to visit Ancient sites as the Colosseum and Forum, or simply walk to see the Trevi Fountain wake up early and schedule tours to end before noon.
- Escape the heat inside a museum: spend afternoons inside quiet and (maybe) air conditioned museums. Capitoline Museums, Palazzo Massimo, Palazzo Barberini or one of the modern art galleries offering special exhibit. absolutely avoid the Vatican (crowded and no airconditioning, in the summer I see people fainting every 5 minutes)
- Protect yourself from the sun: wear protective clothings, hats, sunglasses, long trousers. Anti-UV umbrellas are a good idea too.
- Drink water: bring always with you a refillable water bottle. You can drink plenty of water in Rome for free, we have at every step a fountain
- Refresh yourself: if your badget allows it, choose an hotel with a pool. so after a long day of walking, you can cool down. Warmly suggested especially if you’re travelling with kids. Some of those fancy hotel will let you use the pool even if you’re not a guest, after the payment of a day ticket. You can go (by train) to the beach town of Ostia, and swim in the sea.
- Gelato. because it’s always a good idea 😉
